“I felt sad that I was in this position, but empowered that I had a choice.”

An MSI client’s experience of abortion stigma and the importance of choice.

“I was 22, single and did not have the means to have a baby.”

I became pregnant very unexpectedly, I didn’t know it could happen that easily. I was 22, single and did not have the means to have a baby. I contacted my GP surgery and told them I was pregnant, they then tried to refer me to a midwife. This was difficult because it was the first time I had to tell someone I needed an abortion. My doctor was slightly judgmental on the phone which was incredibly hard and sparked my feelings of shame and guilt.

I was referred to MSI and had a phone appointment with them to answer questions and go through what would happen. I was so nervous but they were so kind on the phone – I didn’t feel judged and it didn’t feel too clinical. I had my appointment booked. It’s a date I will never forget.

“I will forever be grateful for how kindly I was treated on such a difficult day.”

Because of COVID guidelines I went in on my own, which I actually preferred. My scan was the hardest part but I understand why it was important. The team at the clinic were the kindest medical staff I have ever met. So calm and informative and gave me so much empathy as they could see how hard I was finding this.

Everyone has different experiences, mine was very positive even though I was going through a grief that no one really talks about with abortion.

I felt sad that I was in this position, but empowered that I had a choice.
