Our carbon reduction plan

MSI UK blue door.

Our carbon reduction plan

MSI Reproductive Choices UK recognises the urgency of the climate and ecological crisis and the responsibility of healthcare providers to act.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan sets out how we will reduce greenhouse gas emissions across our operations and supply chain, supporting the NHS ambition to achieve net zero.

Since establishing our Carbon Net Zero governance and publishing our initial Carbon Reduction Plan, MSI UK has moved beyond baseline measurement into active delivery, embedding sustainability across our operations, estates, procurement and decision-making processes.

Our approach focuses on reducing emissions while continuing to deliver safe, high-quality care, ensuring sustainability is integrated into how we plan, operate and grow our services.

We have partnered with Talan, a specialist sustainability consultancy, to support the development and ongoing delivery of our Carbon Reduction Plan and interventions.

Our Commitment

We are committed to achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions in line with NHS ambitions, covering:

  • Scope 1 emissions (direct emissions from our operations)
  • Scope 2 emissions (purchased electricity)
  • Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions, including procurement and supply chain)

We have joined other Independent Healthcare Providers in signing a pledge to achieve net zero emissions by 2035 and a net zero supply chain by 2045.

As a sector delivering care to millions of patients each year, this commitment supports the wider NHS ambition to become the world’s first net zero national health service.

Why we are taking action

As a provider of NHS services, we recognise our responsibility not only to treat the impacts of climate change, but to play an active role in addressing its causes.

“Climate change is undoubtedly the biggest long-term threat to the health of our nation and indeed the world. It is therefore vital that healthcare providers not only treat the problems caused by pollution and climate change, but also play their part in tackling the root causes.

As a sector which delivers care to millions of patients every year, I’m thrilled that independent providers are uniting to help tackle climate change and their commitment to achieve net zero by 2035 will make an important contribution in responding to this global emergency.”

Lord Patel of Bradford, Chair of the Independent Healthcare Providers Network (IHPN)

From planning to delivery

Following the development of our initial Carbon Reduction Plan, MSI UK has moved into a delivery phase.

Governance arrangements, reporting processes and organisational accountability structures have been established to support consistent progress across all areas of the organisation.

Sustainability is now being integrated into operational decision-making, ensuring that carbon reduction is part of how we plan and deliver services rather than a standalone programme.

Progress to date

Since establishing our baseline, MSI UK has implemented a number of carbon reduction measures and organisational improvements:

  • Sustainability has been embedded within procurement and ordering processes, supporting more environmentally informed purchasing decisions
  • Engagement has been undertaken with key suppliers to communicate our net zero ambitions and better understand supply chain emissions
  • Opportunities for increased digitalisation have been progressed to reduce paper usage and improve operational efficiency
  • Governance and oversight of carbon reduction activity have been strengthened, with clear accountability and reporting structures
  • Organisational carbon data collection and reporting processes have been enhanced to support improved transparency and assurance

These actions represent a shift from establishing our carbon footprint to embedding sustainability within everyday operations.

Nicola Moore, UK Director of Nursing Midwifery and Quality at MSI Reproductive Choices:

“MSI has achieved so much in the last few years in ensuring outstanding, safe, caring, accessible and responsive services. We are committed to ensuring that these services not only meet the needs of our clients today but do so in way that is sustainable for the planet to meet the needs of future generations.”

“I am proud that MSI is supporting the NHS aim to become the world’s first net zero national health service.”

How we are delivering carbon reduction

Our approach focuses on the areas where we can have the greatest impact:

Estates and Energy

Improving energy efficiency across our estate and supporting long-term decarbonisation planning.

Procurement and Supply Chain

Embedding sustainability into procurement decisions and working with suppliers to reduce Scope 3 emissions.

Travel and Operational Delivery

Reducing emissions through operational efficiency and service design.

Digitalisation and Resource Use

Reducing paper usage and improving efficiency through increased use of digital systems.

This integrated approach ensures carbon reduction is embedded into core operational delivery.

“Our approach has been to move quickly from baseline measurement into practical delivery – embedding sustainability into estates planning, procurement decisions and day-to-day operations. This ensures carbon reduction is not treated as a separate programme, but as part of how we run the organisation.”

Ivari Kare, Divisional General Manager – Operational Excellence

Future priorities

Building on progress to date, MSI UK will:

  • Further integrate carbon considerations into business planning, investment decisions and service development
  • Expand colleague engagement through sustainability awareness initiatives and environmental champions
  • Continue to improve emissions data quality, reporting and assurance
  • Progress targeted carbon reduction initiatives across estates, procurement and operational practices

These actions will support delivery of our long-term net zero commitments.

Our Carbon Reduction Plan

Our Carbon Reduction Plan sets out our baseline emissions, reduction targets and detailed delivery actions.

Our approach

We are committed to ensuring that our services not only meet the needs of our clients today, but do so in a way that is sustainable for the future.

We will continue to build on our progress, ensuring that sustainability is integrated into how we deliver care, manage our estate and work with our partners.

“We are committed to ensuring that our services not only meet the needs of our clients today but do so in way that is sustainable for the planet to meet the needs of future generations.”
