MPs vote to reform abortion law

Today, a historic vote on abortion law reform by MPs saw them vote to end the prosecution of women ending their own pregnancies.  

Amendment NC1, laid by Tonia Antoniazzi MP, will ensure no-one faces invasive investigations following unexplained pregnancy loss.  

We have proudly campaigned for this reform alongside 40+ other pro-choice organisations, including doctors, nurses, royal colleges, abortion providers, and gender-based violence charities. 

Commenting on the vote, Louise McCudden, Head of External Affairs at MSI UK, said:  

“We are delighted that elected MPs voted for this landmark reform to abortion law. We fought hard for this reform and we’re proud that Parliament listened.   

“Once this reform is signed into law, no one will face invasive criminal investigations into their medical history and personal life following an unexplained pregnancy loss. No one will face prison for ending their own pregnancy.     

“Abortion care will continue to be provided in the same way as before. The only difference is that nobody will face criminal prosecution for ending their own pregnancy.   

“At a time when we’re seeing rollbacks on reproductive rights, most notably in the United States, this crucial milestone in the fight for reproductive rights sends a powerful message that our lawmakers are standing up for women.”
