“I wish I hadn’t let social media scare me so much.”
This person tells their at-home medical abortion story, and shares their experience encountering fearmongering surrounding abortion on social media, especially on TikTok.
I’m sharing my positive abortion experience because I read so little about positive ones online, and I had prepared myself for the worst. The fearmongering around medical abortion on social media, especially TikTok, gave me far more anxiety than the abortion itself.
“I was made to feel safe and comfortable straight away.”
I was scared going in for my appointment, mostly because the whole thing seemed so intimidating. But the nurses were lovely and polite, and I was made to feel safe and comfortable straight away. The process was straightforward and the instructions were very clear.
“Being able to take the pills at home, in my own space, made a big difference.”
I was 6 weeks pregnant when I decided to have a medical abortion. Honestly, I’ve had worse periods.* The bleeding was very heavy, and it wasn’t pleasant by any means, but painkillers kept the cramping at bay, and I was comfortable in bed all day with housemates around.
Being able to take the pills at home, in my own space, made a big difference. The painkiller advice was clear, and I had everything I needed. The MSI aftercare line was great too. I called whenever anything felt off, and they made me feel like everything would be okay.
“I’m glad I had my close circle and MSI to support me.”
The unknown was the scariest part for me, and I wish I hadn’t let social media scare me so much. It isn’t a pleasant experience, and nobody wants to go through it, but mine went a thousand times better than I expected. I’m so glad I had my close circle and MSI to support me through my anxiety.
*Every person is different and will experience different levels of pain and bleeding throughout the process. Find out more about pain and medical abortion here.
