A client shares her experience of accessing abortion, contraception and counselling services with MSI.
“I didn’t have any money or time, and I didn’t know how supportive my family would be.”
I found out I was pregnant back in July. My period was late and I took a pregnancy test with my ex partner. I was already six weeks pregnant. I was shocked and ashamed. My ex partner was very supportive and let me know whatever my decision was they would support me.
I knew already that I didn’t want children anytime soon, I’m a uni student, I had a job and I suffer with various mental illnesses. I didn’t have any money or time and I didn’t know how supportive my family would be. I told a few friends and they were very supportive of me, concerned but supportive.
I called MSI about my options and I told them I had already done some research about abortion and contraception so I wanted a medical abortion, and to get the implant. I spoke to two people on the phone: one for the initial “consultation” and the other for more information about the abortion services and booking an appointment. Both were so lovely and I never felt judged by them at all. I went to the clinic the day after my second call with MSI and I had to answer a few questions about my situation and my health, and then I had a scan done. I was asked by the nurse if I wanted to see but I didn’t and she didn’t pressure me or anything. She explained everything we would be doing and she was so kind and supportive.

I took the first pill in the clinic. I waited for about 15 minutes, and then the nurse inserted the implant. I went home with my ex partner and after 24 hours I took the next four pills orally. I started cramping and bleeding almost immediately and passed the pregnancy that night. I did continue bleeding for about two weeks afterwards but the pain did ease.
